This dissertation study examined aesthetics and taste and their relationship to art education. A qualitative design was used to investigate the experiences and perceptions of 59 preservice elementary teachers enrolled in Art for Elementary Teachers at a large midwestern university in the fall semester of 2000. Data included in-class assignments, journals, and examinations from all 59 students, as well as two interviews each from eight of the students.

Art for Elementary Teachers was taught with an emphasis on the topics of taste and aesthetics within a class structure that included group work, games, and other class activities that were structured to encourage critical discourse and reflection. Assignments and examinations were planned around basic concepts but purposefully did not include step-by-step procedures or detailed instruction.

Several findings emerged from students' experiences in noticing and confronting issues of taste and aesthetics. As elementary preservice students deliberately looked at the relationships between taste, aesthetics, art, and education, students discovered multiple ways of knowing and thinking about art and education through critical reflection and discourse and in the process discovered more about themselves, others, and their identity as teachers.
