Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2002.
This study investigated the impact of speech intelligibility and listener experience on perceptions of communicative competence. University students rated the spoken and nonverbal communicative competence of 4 first-grade male children, two with normal speech, two with disordered speech, using a 4-point semantic differential scale. Raters judged speech intelligibility, eye contact, body language, gesture, and overall communicative competence after viewing four 2-minute video segments. To simulate nonverbal communication, two videos were played without sound. Three main effects (speech intelligibility, listener experience, and mode of communication) and four interactions (intelligibility-experience, intelligibility-mode, experience-mode, and intelligibility-experience-mode) were analyzed using a 2 x 2 x 2 mixed ANOVA. The ANOVA revealed two significant main effects for the intelligibility of the child (normal speech or disordered speech) and the mode of communication. There was also a significant two-way interaction for speech intelligibility and mode of communication. Implications for investigating the total process of communication, both spoken and nonverbal, are discussed.
