520 $a The thesis of this dissertation is that the Great Revivals of 1901–1910 was a decisive movement in Korean Christian history. For the Christians it provided a chance to repent of their sins and to begin mobilizing the church. For non-Christians, it was a decisive opportunity to find new hope and a solution to political anxiety and social insecurity. Chapter 1 contains a description of the author's personal interest in the study. The chapter includes a purpose statement, a background description, and a methodological proposal.

The chapter shows a brief account of development in missions prior to the Great Revivals in 1901–1910.
