The thesis of this dissertation is that the Great Revivals of 1901–1910 was a decisive movement in Korean Christian history. For the Christians it provided a chance to repent of their sins and to begin mobilizing the church. For non-Christians, it was a decisive opportunity to find new hope and a solution to political anxiety and social insecurity. Chapter 1 contains a description of the author's personal interest in the study. The chapter includes a purpose statement, a background description, and a methodological proposal.

Chapter 2 is devoted to the historical background of the study. Revivals do not occur in a vacuum. God sent revivals during local or nation-wide crises. The chapter shows a brief account of development in missions prior to the Great Revivals in 1901–1910. This chapter traces this historical introduction of Catholicism and Protestantism to Korea, seeks to find a theological basis for the church's mission in Paul's letters.

Korean scholars do not have a consensus about its cause, but there are three primary categories of proposed causes: spiritual, political, and intentional missiological strategy. This chapter traces the origin of the Great Revival Movement in 1907. The chapter includes the life and thought of Sun Chu Kil who was a leader for the Great Revival Movement. Also this chapter examines the impact of Great Revival Movement in Korea.

Chapter 5 deals with the Great Revival Movement and the Korean indigenous churches. The first missionaries embodied an independent spirit from the beginning of their mission work that eventually promoted the consciousness of the need for evangelization of the fatherland by nationals. This chapter traces the creation of some indigenous features in the Korean church. The day-break prayer meeting which was initiated by Sun Chu Kil was permanently established as a unique characteristic of Korean church. The tradition became one of the main spiritual sources of strength for the Great Revival Movement. In addition, the section demonstrates and evaluates Nevius' Mission Methods for the Korean church. Finally, the chapter traces the forming of the Korean indigenous theology. The Korean church does not adequate framework for Korean theology. Many Korean theologians devote themselves to create Korean theology. The chapter introduces the indigenous theology.
