Thesis (Ed.D.)--Walden University, 2008.
Although it is generally accepted by the public that arts education is important to the development of children, few studies have been conducted to support or dispute this notion. In an effort to balance school budgets, many districts have eliminated arts programs, or have resorted to having visual arts taught by general education teachers with little or no training in the field. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between visual arts education and student academic achievement in the elementary school setting. This correlational study compared the test scores on a state's high-stakes, end-of-the-year test from schools that do and do not have visual arts classes taught by a certified visual arts specialist. This study focused on the aggregate scores of 5th grade students from the 91 elementary schools in a large metropolitan area. The statistical procedures that were implemented in this study included descriptive statistics to analyze demographic data and a multiple regression analysis to determine the relationship between test scores and the presence of a visual arts specialist, after controlling for school size and the number of students that receive free or reduced lunch. The multiple regression analysis indicated that students did not perform significantly better on the test when a visual arts specialist was employed by the schools. The study did indicate a strong negative correlation between the number of students receiving free or reduced lunch and test scores. This study lends itself to social change by encouraging policy-makers to reconsider what is best for the total education of students, not just their test scores. The results will also add to the body of research as to the importance of including visual arts in elementary schools.
