This study examines the treatment of Africa in Social Studies textbooks used in Chicago public schools for the elementary social studies curriculum (1--8th) in the school year 1992--93. The study determines whether or not that treatment reflects the African/American connection, the connection being the coverage of Africa in textbooks used in Chicago public schools, as well as the bearing between the African past and African-American history. The focus of the research was to determine if indeed there was any treatment or coverage of Africa in the texts, and if treated, the extent of that coverage.

Did the textbooks present African American history as beginning with the Emancipation Declaration and the corresponding ports of the eastern coast of America, or with Africa, and there, during what historical time period---was there any reference to ancient history, or just the slave trade of the colonial past? The answer is that most selected textbooks presented the former perspective, although all did not. There were some at the 4th, 7 th, and 8th grades that presented the latter, with some historical coverage of ancient Africa, and little to no connection with African-American history.

The purpose of the study is to give a content analysis of social studies textbooks used in Chicago in 1992--93, to determine whether or not any African history, culture, geography, or other areas of social education were presented at the elementary grade levels, and also whether or not African content was connected with the African-American and antiquity. The method used in this research was the historical method, focusing on an analysis of the content of selected textbooks. Most of the textbooks were acquired from the various Chicago public schools that responded to the initial query.
