Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States. As such, effective obesity prevention programs can play a critical part in addressing the problem. This study examines the participant's perceived effectiveness of the workshops presented in a healthy lifestyle weight management program (LWMP) for undergraduate students. The sample, undergraduate college students, is especially important due to their critical role in society today and in the future. This demographic will have profound effects on policy and education; therefore, a program created for this cohort will have lasting effects on them and succeeding generations. Many studies show that health behaviors practiced during a person's childhood and adolescence are carried through their adulthood. This study seeks to examine the factors that motivate college students to change their health behaviors to more positive ones.

Four health related workshops were held during the Spring 2006 semester that addressed the issue of obesity. Following the workshops, the participants were asked to report their attitudes and beliefs regarding health, nutrition, and physical fitness. Several research questions and hypothesis were postulated. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, means, and standard deviations) and selected inferential statistics were calculated to analyze the results.

Regarding participants' perceived effectiveness of the Lifestyle Weight Management Program (LWMP) workshops, the results indicated that there were only significant results in regards to the workshops' effectiveness on the participants' stages of readiness to change in terms of increasing their exercise amount.

Research Hypothesis 1, predicting that there will be a significant change in participant's recommended servings of vegetables and grains after participating in the multidisciplinary workshops, was not supported. Research Hypothesis 2, predicting that there will be a significant increase in participant's attitude towards their weight management after participating in the multidisciplinary workshops, was not supported. Research Hypothesis 3, predicting that there would be a significant increase in participant's felt need to increase exercise activities after participating in the multidisciplinary workshops was not supported. Research Hypothesis 4, predicting that there would be a significant increase in participant's stages of readiness for change after participating in the multidisciplinary workshops, was partially supported since the results indicated a statistically significant increase in participants' stage of readiness in exercise. No statistically significant results were found in regards to high fat food intake. Additional results indicated that there was no statistically significant increase in participants' motivation to change from Workshop I to the end of the workshop series.

The significance of these findings and implications for theory, research and practice are discussed. This study seeks to add to the literature regarding motivating factors that increase a person's desire to change their health behaviors. The results of this study may provide insight to the development of other obesity prevention programs, especially those in a college setting.
