Thesis (M.A.)--Long Island University, The Brooklyn Center, 2008.
When it comes to the Black family, the portrayal of this institution in literature, music, media outlets and film have been decidedly one-sided and stereotypical. This thesis shows evidence that, contrary to what is being reported in the media, there are Black fathers that are stepping up and taking care of their families, especially in the highly criticized worlds of Hip Hop and urban film. One of the main points of the thesis is the unfair assessment that all young black fathers are "deadbeat dads" who turn their back on their children and responsibility. A major portion of the thesis focuses on the similarities between the negative backlash towards Hip Hop music and the plight of the Black father. Hip Hop music has been brought into the equation due to the fact that some of the most noticeable fathers taking care of their children are from the Hip Hop community (i.e. Diddy, Snoop Dogg, etc.). Hip Hop artists have also used their talents to touch on the topic of fatherhood. Through the use of popular and unpopular Hip Hop music, magazine articles, journal articles, literature, and popular Black films, it is proven that the black man that takes care of his family exists.
