The Hispanic Caribbean writer (Cuba, Republica Dominicana, Puerto Rico) born in the sixties, whose work first appears in the mid nineties, is relatively unknown to most students of contemporary Latin American literature. In contrast, their counterparts in the mainland, the writers of the Crack movement in Mexico and those that became part of the anthology McOndo in 1996, have garnished the attention not only of the media and academia, but also of the large publishing houses spearheaded by Spanish conglomerates. This dissertation analyzes the short stories from three recent anthologies --- Lineas aereas (1999), Los nuevos canibales (2000) and Pequenas resistencias 4 (2005)--- as a means to understand how the Caribbean narrator is defined within the regional context and in comparison to the better known continental Latin-American writers.

As I argue, the current literary market is characterized by the commercial dominance of a handful of Spanish multinationals committed to a model, which publishes a fewer number of books that are backed by important publisher's awards. In order to gage the place of the recent Caribbean narrator known chiefly through anthologies, the dissertation also explores the subject of the short story as a genre and of the anthology as a new genre. The dissertation tracks the changes in critical thinking starting from the old tenets of the genre as seen by Edgar Allan Poe through more recent critical approaches like that of Francisca Noguerol so my study proposes a change in new narrator's attitude compared to previous canonical groups such as the Latin-American boom, and in contrast to the modem "traditional" way of writing a short story. Writing from a self-absorbed narcissistic point of view and using mostly the first person, the Caribbean narrator tends to subvert the need to talk about the socio-political climate of his/her country and opts instead to recreate a personal pathos.

The introduction defines the subject of the literary market and the concept of a literary generation. The first chapter expands on these ideas within the Caribbean context by emphasizing the limited publishing outlets and the emerging vanguard of the Latin-American writer as a standard by which other groups are measured. The second chapter makes the case for a critical understanding of the anthology as a strategy to showcase new talent in the Hispanic Caribbean. Finally, the last chapter analyzes the short stories included in these anthologies, both Caribbean and Latin American, in order to establish the narrators' disdain for overt political discourse, the recurrence of international markers and settings, individualism, trivial storylines, and the virtual narrator as characteristic features of the recent narrating aesthetics. The dissertation argues that, although mostly unknown outside of their borders and ignored by the influential international publishing houses --Cuba being the possible exception--, the Caribbean narrator can also be defined within the same critical framework that is currently been developed to talk about the better known continental Latin American writer.
