Thesis (Ph.D.)--Idaho State University, 2009.
Aspiring counselors come from diverse backgrounds that include innumerable experiences, thoughts, beliefs, and values. These components of a person's being are a primary driving force of behavior in daily living. To be a successful and ethical counselor, it is important for counselors-in-training to understand how their own experiences and values impact their personal and professional development and, most importantly, the well-being of their clients. The implications of this phenomenon are of utmost importance in understanding how to assist developing counselors as they experience value conflict while in training programs as a means to minimize negative counselor-client interactions.

This was done to gain a better understanding of the impact of value conflict on counselor development. The research also sought to uncover the challenges and successes faced while experiencing value conflict. Participant descriptions revealed challenges related to negative emotional experiences of guilt, shame, fear, doubt, and insecurity associated with the experience of value conflict. The results of the current research also revealed the experience of value conflict enhanced cognitive development for the participants and increased reflective counseling skills. Based on the findings of this study, implications and recommendations, and future research are explored related to the admission and development of counselors-in-training.
