This study investigated the coping and adjustment responses of African American women to primary infertility. Level of depression, locus of control, degree of religiosity, use of problem- and emotion-focused coping, and fertility status were the primary variables examined. The sample was a self-selected group of 106 African American women; 61 of these were fertile and 45 were infertile. Drawn from infertility clinics, OB/GYN clinics, a community college, and a university, participants completed a demographic form, a infertility history form, and three questionnaires. Chi-square tests of independence and multiple regression analysis revealed that, when combined, depression, locus of control, and religiosity were predictors of fertility status, with depression emerging as the most dominant predictor; that positive reappraisal was the most common mode of coping for all participants; that none of the participants had sought psychological counseling; and that the infertile women did not seek social support for their infertility. These findings suggest that more research is needed in this area to expand and verify the results of this study and provide effective intervention strategies for African American women seeking medical solutions to infertility.
