General education has been a controversial issue in higher education for centuries and has been a focus of concern in most of the 1980s reports on education. While the benefits of general education are well documented, specific outcomes expected of general education for undergraduate professional students have not been well defined. This research was undertaken to determine the importance placed on general education competencies expected of professional baccalaureate students by 10 professional and liberal arts faculty groups.

The sample of 1012 for this study was drawn randomly from identified professional and liberal arts faculty populations teaching in land-grant institutions. The survey instrument developed was based on six previous studies of general education conducted over a 36-year period. Faculty rated each of the 34 general education competencies on a Likert-type scale. The return rate was 61%.

Analysis of the data demonstrated significant differences in the degree of value placed on most of the competencies when faculty were grouped by professional area and gender, but not by rank, highest degree earned, or age. The liberal arts faculty group rated the most competencies high. Nursing and home economics faculty, the groups with the highest proportion of females, rated more of the competencies higher than any other professional groups. Women placed significantly more value on 24 of the competencies, and men placed more value on only one. Agriculture and engineering faculty rated more of the competencies lower than other groups.

Although agreement varies, four of the five competencies ranked lowest by the whole sample were explicitly or implicitly concerned with global interconnectedness. These competencies include awareness of the distribution of the world's resources, appreciation of the fine arts as forms of expression, the significance of language as reflective of culture, and exposure to a foreign language. At present, the competencies most highly regarded by faculty receive little formal emphasis in organized curricula.
