Thesis (M.S.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2008.
Understanding the impact of interpretation on program participants is important as parks, museums and other interpretive and recreational managers make decisions with ever tightening budgets and limited resources. What, if any impact does attending a public tour have on a participant's attitude toward the resource? Does knowledge acquisition improve? Does attending a tour with targeted messaging have an effect on tour participants' intent to improve specific conservation behaviors?

Seattle Public Utilities (formerly the Seattle Water Department) has supported interpretive bus tours for the general public since 1992, subsidizing bus rental as well as providing interpretive staff and facilities. Since 1992, nearly 6,000 adults have attended the 3-hour watershed tour. These tours take participants to the source of their water supply which allows them to connect both intellectually and emotionally to the resource and provides an opportunity through interpretation to gain an understanding of the issues surrounding a limited water supply with numerous demands. Water conservation in the Pacific Northwest is critical as populations in urban areas grow and changing climate patterns affect mountain snow-pack in the Cascade Mountains.

To determine what if any, affect attending a Cedar River Watershed interpretive bus tour had on participants, a pre and post tour survey was conducted. Responses were analyzed to determine any effect on tour participants' attitudes, knowledge gain and water conservation behaviors.

Results indicated there was a positive effect of tour participation on knowledge gain, a slight effect on participants' attitude about water and water quality, and finally, a small positive effect on intent to improve water conservation behaviors at home.
