This narrative study examined the stories of the literacy experiences, and related life experiences of three incarcerated Black adolescent males identified as poor readers. Specifically, the two research questions were (a) What do the life histories tell as about three Black adolescent males' literacy and life experiences? and (b) How do these experiences stagnate, diminish, or contribute to their engagement in school literacy practices and learning?

The researcher conducted the study using life history methodology, which allowed the participants to tell their stories in their own voices. It also encouraged these young men to reflect upon and give meaning to their experiences, communicate the richness of their insights and vigor of their thoughts, and enabled them to share personal knowledge they obtained throughout their young lives. Guided by the theoretical perspective of literacy as a social practice, the researcher used narrative inquiry methods to analyze the data and construct a narrative profile for each participant. These profiles illustrate how the participants' experiences as Black males influenced their experiences in and out of school. This in turn provided a means for understanding the participants' classroom literacy experiences.

Analysis of the three participants' life histories after rereading and analyzing their perspectives and the researcher's journal reflections revealed common themes. A teacher's care and attention was present and important to the Black male participants; school classrooms were a controlled environment; issues of poverty were reflected in the participant's environments; and the participants were perceptive and cognizant of their strengths and weaknesses, how classroom literacy instruction should take place, and what reading materials were interesting to them.
