Thesis (Ph.D.)--Emory University, 2008.
Based on in-depth interviews with men who served decades inside prison, completed a master's program at Sing Sing, and are now leaders in their communities, this dissertation explores the following questions: how do some people not only survive but also counteract the crippling effects of being incarcerated in the U.S. penal system? How did these individuals serve their sentences in ways that demonstrate resistance and transformation? In short, what enables some people to emerge from prison to (re)build their lives and inspire others? All of these men frame their experiences by evoking themes of dehumanization, isolation and social death, and their narratives attest to powerful strategies of resistance wherein faith and education serve as vehicles for transformation, redemption/liberation and successful community participation after prison. They also point to a "spirit of punishment," rooted historically and theologically in ideologies of sin, evil and otherness, at the heart of contemporary penal policy, and suggest a unique alternative theology---a transformative theology that is realized in relationship and which holds a key for long-term civic reintegration. By paying careful attention to the voices of those who have lived and survived the prison experience from the inside, this dissertation aims to generate critical dialogue about "self" and "other," faith-based praxis in the prison context, and the pedagogy of liberatory education. Ultimately, it seeks to offer insight into how individual experiences of transformation can move the U.S. judicial model from a system of punishment to a system of restoration.
