Educational research continues to prove that the African American student population performs lower on measures of academic achievement than that of their European American counterparts. Research studies have found that many African American students develop apathy toward school, mentally "drop out" of school, or are labeled as behavior problems by the time they are in the fourth grade. These alarming facts illuminate the dire need for elementary school administrators and educators to identify effective practices and strategies that will help to promote academic excellence early in a child's academic career.

This qualitative study used participatory action research, the researcher dialogued with 11 African American elementary school-aged students in the age range from 6 to 10 and 15 African American parent(s)/guardian(s) from one school within a diverse school district. The study examined how academic achievement and excellence can be promoted among elementary African American students from the perspectives of African American parent(s) and/or guardian(s) and their young children. The study found that the children and their parent(s)/guardian(s) both desired caring, supportive, and reflective teachers who were willing to develop the necessary relationships and bonds with each student and their family regardless of the student's environmental circumstances outside of the school. The participants were eager to share their opinions and concerns about the academic achievement gap and to have their suggestions validated through the research process. The study was significant in that it addressed the need for school administrators and teachers to listen to the recommendations of parent(s)/guardian(s) and students as they identify practices and strategies that help to promote academic excellence early in a student's schooling.
