This study examined the roles and experiences of early childhood teachers who work with children affected by violence in their homes or communities. Through interviews, twenty teachers from five child care settings in urban areas described the sources and impact of violence in the lives of children in their care, assessed their skill level and training needs in relation to children and violence, and reflected on their skills in working with such children. The teachers' interviews revealed that children ages 2.5 to 6 years disclosed serious incidents of violence to their teachers that they have witnessed or experienced directly. The findings identified nine styles utilized by teachers in response to young children's disclosures of violence. The response styles emphasize oral communication skills which suggest that nonverbal expressive opportunities may be overlooked by early childhood teachers. The study describes how teachers utilize violent events from children's lives as a means to teach social skills, problem solving techniques, safety planning, and alternatives to violence. The participants reported their personal exposure to violence in their childhood and adult years on a questionnaire. Findings indicate that 85% of the sample reported exposure to violent events as children and/or adults. The influence of the participants' histories of violence on their role with violence-involved preschoolers is discussed. The interviews reveal an overwhelming interest for training in how to communicate with children about the violent events in their lives regardless of a teachers' educational level or personal experience with violence. The study notes that formal trainings related to issues of violence and children are lacking in child care programs. Training for child care staff on a range of issues pertaining to family and community violence and support structures in programs that work with children affected by violence are strongly recommended.
