The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which workplace violence effects ambulatory healthcare workers, and to understand reporting practices. Through a researcher-developed survey, this cross-sectional retrospective study explores how frequently ambulatory healthcare staff are exposed to workplace violence, how often they are reporting, the barriers to reporting, and the effects of experiencing workplace violence on absenteeism and intent to leave. The study emphasizes the extent of the problem, as well as exploring whether personal and professional factors impact reporting practices. The findings suggest that ambulatory healthcare workers experience workplace violence at high rates, but report at low rates. Additionally, organizational leadership plays an important role in employee's willingness to report, and workplace violence negatively impacts absenteeism and intent to leave a job. Recommendations for practice highlight the importance of organizational commitment to prevention efforts, continuing education for staff, and amplified efforts to respond to workplace violence when it occurs.
