Thesis (Ed.D.)--Jones International University, 2014.
In 2012, California instigated new learning outcomes for early childhood professionals in the subject of creative arts that has resulted in sporadic and incomplete lessons. Currently, many preschools impart creative arts in an undefined manner and learning outcomes are not completed successfully. There is no specific design or sequence in order that young children may develop artistic growth and creative skills (Flaming, 2010). To solve this particular problem, a small liberal arts college implemented a Participatory Action Research (PAR). This dissertation is a retrospective study conducted on the archival data collected during the PAR. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the perceptions of teachers concerning the outcomes of creative arts lessons that were used in the 2012 PAR. Multiple data were drawn from a collection of sources and analyzed for age appropriate progression of arts activities. The overriding question was 'what is the perceived value of the creative arts activities that were shared and taught by the preschool teachers during the 2012 PAR?' The research design and methodology was qualitative in nature and archival data was obtained and triangulated from lesson plans, interviews, observations and journal reflections. The findings brought to light that an exemplary creative arts curriculum will not only enhance young children's creative skills and future academic performance, but also had a major influence on their self expression and developing vocabulary.
