Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), 2021.
.
There is barely any space left for serious literature to sprout in the 1950s Hong Kong owing to the political divergence and the commercialized milieu. However, Everyman's Literature is an exception. Straying away from the socioeconomic allurement, editors of Everyman's Literature, namely Huang Sicheng (1919-1984), Li Kuang (1927-1991) and Xiahou Wuji (1930-2018), accentuated the artistic value of literature. With the aim of fostering young writers, editors availed themselves of translated literature as models for writing to serve their pedagogical purpose. This thesis seeks to explore the interplay between translation and literary writing education. Through an analysis of first-hand archival materials, this study investigates the editorial ideas and literary poetics of editors and analyzes their choice of texts and the language of translations. The main body of the thesis comprises four chapters. Chapter One reconstructs the literary context of Hong Kong in the 1950s and its impact on the founding of Everyman's Literature. The existing scholarship views the magazine as the mouthpiece of the US propaganda. Based on a detailed examination of Everyman's Literature's financial resources as well as editors' political stand and literary aspirations, this thesis argues that Everyman's Literature is devoted to cultivate the young. Chapter Two examines the role translation played in Everyman's Literature. Everyman's Literature presented many translated works for editors regarded translation as models{A0}for students' writing. Due to the lack of manuscripts and the editor's inadequate language capability, the fellow Everyman's Literature literati tended to plagiarize the earlier translations published in the mainland without attributing the original source. Chapter Three explores Everyman's Literature's choice of texts, which was shown to have been influenced by the editors' belief that the condensed structure of short stories, the diversified narrative skills, and the writing techniques of realism would assist students in writing. Chapter Four investigates the influence of the editors' view of literary language on their translingual textual strategies. Objecting to the so-called "Europeanized language", the editors aspired to establish a new standard of literary language for students' writing, resulting in the amendment of the "Europeanized" elements in their published translations. The thesis thus not only clarifies the misunderstanding of Everyman's Literature in the existing scholarship, but also fills a gap in the study of the history of literary translation in the 1950s Hong Kong.
