佛教對中國的意義,可以從過去和未來兩個面向去找尋;除了信仰和思想的導引,它也存在於我們的文化記憶之中,甚至於成為知識的一部分;因此不論是否接受宗教的洗禮,它都深深烙印在中國人生活的底層。雖然,以宗教的根源性而言,佛教並非誕生於中國;但若把佛教視為世人共有的文化遺產,則中國人擁有佛教最大部分的典籍文獻,形成許多值得學術界探索的知識領域;中國佛教文學所開啟的研究面向甚為廣闊,如何將這些過去的文學資產引渡到更長遠的未來,是近現代學術開啟的新課題。佛教文化的傳播與宗教信仰關係是直接的,而佛教知識的傳播則不完全借助宗教信仰的力量;尤其在儒家重視典籍文獻的文化基底上,隨著中國傳統典籍與思想的傳播的結果,東亞的漢語文化圈流傳的佛教信仰,都保有各自的佛教文學。這些國家佛教文學的共同根源,是來自印度傳譯為漢語的文本;當中保存了佛陀與弟子們口述的三藏經典、各種形式的佛教歷史敘事、由民間口述傳播的各類俗文學、宗教圖像及文字撰述、戲劇音樂舞蹈等表演形式。然而多數關於佛教文學歷史書寫,以闡述經典弘揚教義為主,如果將過往佛門保存的文字,概以「佛學」視之,排除於「文學」之外,實未足以涵蓋其出現在宗教以外廣範的影響力。有鑑於此,尋求更多過往佛教史料文字敘述,呈現佛教存在的精神面貌與社會功能,成為二十世紀初啟蒙思潮中文學歷史書寫的新方向。中國佛教文學在近代如何與知識啟蒙發生連結?這個研究主題可以上溯至西方傳教士來到東方為起點。晚明耶穌會傳教士將中國佛教知識向西方傳播,隨著西方對中國的認識,各種時空因素推動之下,文學史家先以西方文化思維模式,建構出宏觀的佛教文學知識譜系;西學傳到中國之後,又以啟蒙思想家為中心,推動了中國佛教文學研究,並且納入高等教育所編寫的《中國文學史》,成為中國文學史編寫與鑑賞的新觸媒。中國佛教文學知識啟蒙與歷史書寫的研究,與清末西學傳入的背景產生關連;因此本論文將以近現代所發展的中國佛教文學研究為背景,並且依循中國佛教與文學的共同脈絡,以探索歷史片段的方式,考掘在近現代的文學史發展過程中,關於中國佛教文學的題材與線索,藉此呈現自一九○四年至一九四九年之間中國佛教文學歷史書寫的內容與特質。.

How to extradite these past literary assets to the longer-term future is a new topic opened by modern academics.
