佛教對中國的意義，可以從過去和未來兩個面向去找尋；除了信仰和思想的導引，它也存在於我們的文化記憶之中，甚至於成為知識的一部分；因此不論是否接受宗教的洗禮，它都深深烙印在中國人生活的底層。雖然，以宗教的根源性而言，佛教並非誕生於中國；但若把佛教視為世人共有的文化遺產，則中國人擁有佛教最大部分的典籍文獻，形成許多值得學術界探索的知識領域；中國佛教文學所開啟的研究面向甚為廣闊，如何將這些過去的文學資產引渡到更長遠的未來，是近現代學術開啟的新課題。佛教文化的傳播與宗教信仰關係是直接的，而佛教知識的傳播則不完全借助宗教信仰的力量；尤其在儒家重視典籍文獻的文化基底上，隨著中國傳統典籍與思想的傳播的結果，東亞的漢語文化圈流傳的佛教信仰，都保有各自的佛教文學。這些國家佛教文學的共同根源，是來自印度傳譯為漢語的文本；當中保存了佛陀與弟子們口述的三藏經典、各種形式的佛教歷史敘事、由民間口述傳播的各類俗文學、宗教圖像及文字撰述、戲劇音樂舞蹈等表演形式。然而多數關於佛教文學歷史書寫，以闡述經典弘揚教義為主，如果將過往佛門保存的文字，概以「佛學」視之，排除於「文學」之外，實未足以涵蓋其出現在宗教以外廣範的影響力。有鑑於此，尋求更多過往佛教史料文字敘述，呈現佛教存在的精神面貌與社會功能，成為二十世紀初啟蒙思潮中文學歷史書寫的新方向。中國佛教文學在近代如何與知識啟蒙發生連結？這個研究主題可以上溯至西方傳教士來到東方為起點。晚明耶穌會傳教士將中國佛教知識向西方傳播，隨著西方對中國的認識，各種時空因素推動之下，文學史家先以西方文化思維模式，建構出宏觀的佛教文學知識譜系；西學傳到中國之後，又以啟蒙思想家為中心，推動了中國佛教文學研究，並且納入高等教育所編寫的《中國文學史》，成為中國文學史編寫與鑑賞的新觸媒。中國佛教文學知識啟蒙與歷史書寫的研究，與清末西學傳入的背景產生關連；因此本論文將以近現代所發展的中國佛教文學研究為背景，並且依循中國佛教與文學的共同脈絡，以探索歷史片段的方式，考掘在近現代的文學史發展過程中，關於中國佛教文學的題材與線索，藉此呈現自一九○四年至一九四九年之間中國佛教文學歷史書寫的內容與特質。.
