This thesis is a unit of study, designed for 5th grade to middle school art classes and is centered on the theme of storytelling. The curriculum design includes contemporary artists, Marjane Satrapi, Michaela Goade, and Faith Ringgold, whose work emphasizes themes of relationship to place through the lenses of race as well as personal and cultural history intertwined with the imagination. Each of the artists combines images and text to tell stories through books, quilts, or graphic novels. The culminating project involves students creating a short storybook of their own with watercolor illustrations and handwritten text and then binding the book. The thesis covers the artist teacher's positionality and reflective statement about the curriculum design process. Also included is a discussion about the artist teacher's emerging tenets of practice in teaching centered on cultural awareness and integrated social-emotional learning (Hammond, 2015), creating learning partnerships (Moll and Gozalez, 1992), and joy (Muhammad, 2020).
