This thesis provides an overview of economic and policy changes that have shaped Vietnam in recent decades. The education and agriculture sectors particularly have endured much change in goals, direction and focus. Current literature has identified critical thinking as a skills gap among recent Vietnamese graduates, but a common understanding of the broad concept of critical thinking (CT) has yet to be articulated for Vietnam and may not align with Western definitions and theories. Exploratory research used a grounded theory approach in order to co-construct the Vietnamese agriculture industry's understanding of CT, and their expectations of how those skills are utilized in the workforce. Research included diverse qualitative and experiential datapoints, primarily utilizing 30-minute informal interviews with Human Resource (HR) and hiring managers. Interviews were conducted on three types of agriculture businesses: small Vietnamese companies, large Vietnamese companies, and multinational companies operating in Vietnam. Those interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed through hand-coding. The understanding and valuation of critical thinking and its associated traits were then categorized according to relatedness, and assessed for correlation between Vietnamese and Western businesses, and alignment with currently held understandings of critical thinking. Consistently expressed new traits which were not able to be categorized into currently held theories of critical thinking were developed into a new model utilizing traits relating to the Vietnamese context. Additional observations and recommendations from these participants were also included in the analysis.{A0}
