The recent appointments of two Black women, Roz Brewer and Thasunda Brown Duckett, as CEOs demonstrate that there are successful strategies to breaking through what has been called a "concrete ceiling" in corporations. However, increasing the representation of African American women in corporate leadership roles continues to be a struggle. While extant research on Black women leaders emphasizes the challenges faced in progressing to senior-level positions, their representation in executive roles in energy companies is particularly stark. This research study focuses on discovering the different forms of agency that Black women leaders have used to navigate the path to leadership roles in the oil industry. Because emotional intelligence has been associated with effective leadership, the study explores how self-perception, self-expression, interpersonal relations, decision making, and stress management skills are used by African American women as they progress up the corporate ladder. Participants were identified using the purposive sampling method. This approach allowed me to achieve the study's objective of identifying a sample of the limited number of Black women who hold senior leadership positions in the energy sector. The data were gathered during semi-structured interviews with the participants using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Overall, the findings reflect high empathy, social responsibility, and relationship management skills among the participants. Further, the results help us understand how emotional intelligence competencies are leveraged in the lived experiences of African American women leaders in the oil industry to progress in their careers. The findings also create an opportunity to identify successful strategies using emotional intelligence competencies for all emerging leaders.
