Technology promises a democratization of opportunity. Nowhere is this more evident than in music, where major music streaming platforms like Spotify tout mission statements that promise to give "creative artists the opportunity to live off of their art." This dissertation tests the degree to which opportunity for music professionals has changed amid the introduction of music streaming services using an analysis of industry trends and an interrupted time series analysis of employment and wage data for music composers and music performers alongside industry establishment and employment data for musical groups and artists. The findings suggest that there is no clear-cut answer. We see a rise in entrepreneurship in the sound recording industries but small firms split a shrinking share of revenue; no evidence for democratizing the geographic distribution of opportunity; increased opportunities and lessening income inequality among music composers amid the introduction of music streaming services; a universal negative impact of music streaming services on opportunities for music performers; and a unilateral positive effect of technological adoption on opportunity in music. This work seeks to contribute to existing literature about the precarity of symbol production in the internet era by adding a quantitative component to a largely qualitative subfield while also offering an operationalization of opportunity in media and a test of technological utopianism.
