This thesis offers a critique of the current use of three historical racist tropes that have occurred throughout American history: blackface, whitewashing, and colorism. It argues the importance of diversity in Hollywood and television. Additionally, this thesis will analyze how these racial tropes have been adopted into the age of social media. This thesis will also explore the negative stereotypes and how they are shown through film and other forms of media. Again, this thesis will explore the separation and erasure of African-Americans based on complexion. Blackface, whitewashing, and colorism are a trio of oppression that support and follow one another. Blackface began as a method of pushing a narrative about African-Americans ' false characteristics in 21st-century film. Blackface is used as a comic relief that is seen as lighthearted and acceptable. As with whitewashing and how it replaces people of color with a non-person of color. Whitewashing also robs African-Americans of leading roles that speak directly to the culture. Colorism today has grown into a form of oppression that is out in the open and often deliberate. What was once subtle and subliminal is now openly discuss and exercised. Blackface, whitewashing, and colorism have been a significant part of Hollywood and other forms of media. Due to ignorance, racism, privilege, and complacency, blackface whitewashing, and colorism are challenging to dismantle. The sources incorporated in this thesis are journals, books, articles, blogs, reviews, and commentary on each topic. The sources serve to support the observation of blackface, whitewashing, and colorism in Hollywood, television, social media, and everyday life. These sources will analyze how each of these tropes helps close African-Americans out of the culture and trends they created while acknowledging the double standards they face. This thesis will bring attention to the many forms of oppression that African-Americans face. Furthermore, this thesis will offer insight into how these oppressions occur and how they can be detrimental to future generations.
