The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the experiences of two-year college mathematics students, mathematics faculty, and alumni of the college who have a STEM degree requiring College Algebra and are currently in their STEM field, all in the Oklahoma region of the United States. Bandura's SE theory and Engestrom's CHAT were the theoretical framework. Three research questions guided this study: How do two-year college mathematics students describe their experience in the College Algebra coursework as it relates to their self-efficacy, in preparation for them to meet the requirements of STEM jobs upon completion of an Associate's degree? How do two-year college mathematics faculty describe their experience and the nature of the College Algebra curriculum in preparing students for success, in meeting the requirements of STEM jobs upon graduation? How do two-year college alumni of STEM degree programs describe their experience in their College Algebra course in preparing them to meet the requirements of their STEM job? Twelve participants in three distinct groups were individually interviewed leading to a thematic analysis of the data. A four-step data analysis process revealed 10 core themes overall: Student themes of culture of influence through support, preparation for career, and educational value; Faculty themes of developing a learning culture, application of material, foundational knowledge, and workplace requirements; Alumni themes of workplace application, self-efficacy, and educational value. Student results indicated the material they were learning was adequate for a STEM career. Faculty held that the program is foundational for STEM jobs and ample to prepare students. Alumni felt prepared for STEM careers after graduation.
