There is a misconception among a large proportion of the public in the United States. The misconception is that transgender identities (a person who does not identify with the gender that they were assigned at birth: non-binary, genderqueer, transgender, etc.) are some sort of new phenomenon, or that these "new" genders are all made up. However, there is ample anthropological and archeological evidence that other cultures have recognized multiple gender identities throughout history. In a time of ever-increasing polarization, misinformation, and bigotry, coupled with the increase of people identifying as queer, museums and other institutions of knowledge are obligated to be more active in presenting these histories to more adequately serve their respective communities. By educating others about the long history of non-binary identities, museums could provide resources for those who may be questioning aspects of their own identities; in addition, the spread of this information could help create a more accepting environment for queer people in both public and private spaces.
