This thesis is a qualitative study involving visual analysis of protest art by youth expressing their convictions of justice in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. My research question is how do youth influence social change through artistic expression? The purpose of this study is to explore how art education can facilitate in developing youth' sense of social awareness by centering curriculum around culturally relevant topics that matter to, strengthen the voice of, and empower youth. The data includes works of art produced by youth ages 11 to 18. The themes that emerged from the data analysis illustrate that youth, in their artistic expression, predominantly use the interaction of text and image, representin', juxtaposition, and gazing as elements and principles of design (Gude, 2001) to influence social change through upstander behaviors that confront oppressors and systems of oppression by memorializing, empowering and educating others to act.
