The purpose of this study was to conduct a comprehensive historical analysis of heterogeneous string class method books from 1912 to 2012. This study included all beginning heterogeneous string method books published in the United States from 1912 to 2012 (N = 75). First edition copies of string method books that fit the delimitations of the study were located in the Performing Arts Reading Room Library of Congress in Washington, D. C., through Interlibrary Loan, viewed at University Libraries, or purchased through rare book websites. The string method books were analyzed using the researcher-developed String Method Book Analysis Measure (SMBAM), which was developed to identify historical trends within the one-hundred years of method books divided into three dimensions: Dimension One referred to physical layout, Dimension Two pertained to repertoire content, and Dimension Three addressed string pedagogical content. The purpose statements of the method books were also recorded. External criticism and internal criticism were established through copyright records in the Copyright Records Reading Room of the Library of Congress. The one-hundred-year span of the study was divided into three Periods for the quantitative and historical analysis: Period One, 1912 to 1945; Period Two, 1946 to 1967, and Period Three, 1968 to 2012. In terms of the quantitative findings in Dimension One, the physical characteristics of string method books remained relatively stable over time. In terms of repertoire content, there was a statistically significant increase in the number of Improvisation, Composition, and Music History exercises within Period Three. Regarding the pedagogical content of the violin book, there was a decrease in the number of positions, the number of scales, the number of fourth finger exercises, the number of bow distribution exercises, and the number of extension exercises from Period One to Period Three, though these were not determined to be significant over time. In terms of historical findings, the shift to group class instruction in Period One created challenges and opportunities for music educators, which necessitated new teaching materials. In Period Two, method books were characterized by an increase in references to educational psychology and a scientific approach reflected in concern with sequencing, organization, and presentation of topics. This period also included a proliferation of advertisements within method books and evidence of the influence of publishers and commercial pressures on method book authors. Period Three featured method books written by some of the most influential string pedagogues, like Rolland, Applebaum, and Bornoff. The content of method books written within this timeframe reflected major historical events in music education, such as the Tanglewood Symposium in 1967 and the adoption of the National Standards in 1994.
