YouTube as a platform has existed for over a decade and based on compiled lists, over one hundred museums have made YouTube channels. The British Museum and The Mutter Museum both have highly successful YouTube channels. However, the two museums are very different, both in size and content: the British Museum is one of the largest museums in the world, while the Mutter Museum is a small medical museum. Nevertheless, both museums have found strategies that work for them on YouTube. The British Museum focuses primarily on exhibition based content and the Mutter Museum on artifact based content. Both museum channels have existed for a similar amount of time, the British Museum's having been made in 2006 and the Mutter Museum's since 2009; both channels have posted between 450 and 500 videos during their existence. Both museums have demonstrated a clear understanding of the potential of YouTube as a platform featuring consistent branding and other strategies to draw viewers in. The channels are reflections of both museums mission statements and help them both to achieve the basic goals of education and outreach. This thesis compares these two museums and their range of use of this medium. It also addresses each museum's handling of controversial topics and initiatives during the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper showcases The British Museum's and the Mutter Museum's versatile use of YouTube as a platform and provides models for other museums.
