This study examined career maturity of eighth grade students and variables influencing students' career aspirations. The purpose of this study was four-fold: (1) to assess career aspirations by gender for eighth grade students; (2) to examine and analyze the relationship between eighth grade students' career aspirations and their parents' educational attainment; (3) to examine and analyze the relationship between eighth grade students' career aspirations and their parents' occupations; and (4) to examine and analyze the relationships between eighth grade students' career aspirations and reading and numerical skills. Data were provided by 115 female and 138 male eighth grade students (N = 253) enrolled in a Pennsylvania Suburban Middle School. Subjects' results from the ACT, Career Planning Survey Assessment Booklet Form A; subjects' responses from a questionnaire pertaining to parents' educational attainment and occupations; and subjects' career aspirations were coded for use in the data analyses. The study utilized both descriptive and inferential statistics. These methods were used to determine the relationship of the independent variables (students' gender, parents' educational attainment, parents' occupations, students' numerical and reading skills) to the dependent variable, (students' career aspirations defined as business contact, business operations, technical, science, arts, and social service). In summary, it was evident from this study that individual differences in career aspirations were associated with specific antecedent conditions such as students' gender, fathers' educational attainment, fathers' occupations, and students' reading skills. The five key findings, as a result of Chi-square statistical analysis, revealed the following: (1) there was a significant relationship (p =.003) between students' career aspirations and students' gender; girls in the study did not expect to enter traditionally male technical careers; (2) there was a significant relationship (p =.02) between boys' career aspirations and fathers' educational attainment; (3) there was a significant relationship (p =.03) between students' career aspirations and fathers' occupations; (4) there was a significant relationship (p =.002) between boys' career aspirations and fathers' occupations; and (5) there was a significant relationship between students' career aspirations and students' reading skills (p =.005).
