Historically, women and their role in life have been defined by the prevailing culture in which they lived. This dissertation questions the validity of those definitions by looking at a woman who did not accept cultural limitations but instead lived by her own law: Shakespeare's Cleopatra. This hermeneutic study analyzes how Cleopatra's behavior, as expressed with exquisite poetry and robust emotion, challenged the attitudes of Elizabethan England; how the playwright explored and expressed the power and heart of one female without patronizing or diluting her, but instead presented a full complex woman on stage, and in so doing planted the seeds for a new female consciousness. For centuries, Cleopatra has been characterized as everything from a brazen harlot to an idealized goddess. In Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra Rome is the prevailing culture of power which views the queen of Egypt with bitter disdain, blaming her for seducing Antony and leading him to ruin. This research is interested in discovering the woman behind the slander. A close reading of Antony and Cleopatra reveals the arc of Cleopatra's emotional growth. In the beginning of the play, she displays the emotions of an insolent, ego-driven adolescent. By the final act, she has become an emotionally intelligent woman who found a way to blend her royal persona with her fragile humanity. To give perspective and context to the study, the research explored consciousness, the validity of art as a psychological barometer, some of the history of female oppression in Western society, the culture that nourished and produced Shakespeare, and the many ways that readers, audiences, and critics have interpreted Shakespeare's Cleopatra. The intention of this dissertation is to illuminate and track one person's path toward individuation. The hope is that by exploring and defining the transformation of female consciousness from a specific point of view, women will learn to live their personal potential and men and women will better understand what constitutes a healing change in all human consciousness.
