What does the world look like if you can't see it? What does the world feel like if you see it darker, less colored, or blurred? "While swimming I felt I was surrounded by coolness, for me coolness means blue," said my friend Amy. Amy had low vision since she had a serious incident at a young age. Many people suffer from a visual impairment that spans from being blind at birth, being in accidents, or having other eye problems resulting from macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, and more. All of their visual and spatial perceptions are different. According to statistics from the World Health Organization, about 40 million people in the world are fully blind, and another 250 million people suffer from some form of visual impairment. As the minority group of the population, the needs of visually impaired people could easily be ignored by society. Most people are not aware of the solitary blind, and thus they are not empathized with. Prejudice and misunderstanding existamong people causing the lack of communication and services to those who suffer from visual impairment. Many visuallyimpaired people live alone and their impairment forms a kind of isolation and loneliness (Adnan and Anwar 2017, 994). Thepandemic has exacerbated this situation after people experienced the lockdown and social distancing.Research shows the intensity of loneliness decreases as the number of relationships in the social network grows and theamount of emotional and social support exchanged grows (Gierveld, Tilburg, and Dykstra, 2006). Our spatial perceptioncan be applied to imagined objects as well as to external stimuli ( C. L. Colby, 2001). Even with weak visual sensation, people with visual impairment still receive more information through touching and hearing perceptions. The "Ocular" visualimpairment learning center, is developed to give those with impairments and the public a place to interact with each other. It is in the Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan.
