This paper will be highlighting two problems with the current history education in America-the use of standardized tests, and the use of textbooks. With standardized tests prioritizing memorization and high scores over critical thinking, students are expected to learn "important" dates and names over taking a critical look at history. Textbooks on the other hand provide broad coverage of topics and are presented in a way that makes analysis difficult for even the best of high school students. This, in turn, creates an environment in most high school classrooms where students feel disconnected from their own history. Black students do not get to hear the stories of people who look like them unless sandwiched between the majority history and oftentimes glossed over. All students leave their history classrooms without the full story. Both of these are a loss for the country. I offer digital humanities as a way to bridge the gap that exists because of the reliance on textbooks in classrooms. Digital humanities allow teachers and students to dive deeper into Black history than they could with textbooks and in a language that stimulates conversation and critical thinking. Studies and case studies have shown that it is possible to keep students engaged and foster healthy learning environments when they are introduced to digital humanities sources. Using this as a tool can greatly help the current climate in history classrooms, changing the way the students learn about Black history and in turn the way they learn about American history as a whole.
