The purpose of this study was to conduct a review of the effectiveness, as perceived by the students, of the aural skills curriculum required of all music majors in two post-secondary institutions in Taiwan, 1986-1988, in order to make recommendations for improvement. The institutions involved were the National Taiwan Normal University and the National Institute of the Arts. The required curricular content was studied, first as generally promulgated by the National Taiwan Ministry of Education, and as more specifically interpreted by the instructors involved at each institution, where the two-year program was divided into ability levels. Evaluation techniques and outcomes, including initial placement tests and records of student progress during the three-year period were also studied. A focal point of the study was the use of a questionnaire to discover students' perceptions of the programs in relation to a number of selected, categorized program aspects. The questionnaire was voluntarily responded to by 131 of 198 students at National Taiwan Normal University, and 43 of 84 students at the National Institute of the Arts, response rates of 60% and 51% respectively. Findings indicated a high degree of positive correlation between responses from both institutions (+.86). Students' most positive responses to the programs related to the efficacy of the use of ability groupings (97.1%), and the perceived validity of the initial placement tests (67.3%). Ranked third, but by a bare majority, was their understanding of the program's instructional goals and objectives (52.8%). Ranked fourth, fifth and sixth, hovering just below the 50th percentile, were the students' satisfaction regarding instructional content (47.7%), adequacy of the teaching strategies (47.5%), and evaluation techniques (45.4%). The students were least satisfied with aspects regarding the course scheduling and duration. The study concludes with proposals for a revised curricular program for aural skills training and a revised initial placement test, with sections regarding clarification of objectives and suggested classroom strategies.
