The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore gender inequity as perceived, experienced, and observed by women in the public health workforce. Participants were women who have worked in the public health field for over a decade and experienced gender inequity. Narrative inquiry was used examined the perspectives of women with public health careers about personal and observed experiences of gender inequity and the ways these experiences have shaped their careers. Data revealed seven major emergent themes: (a) differential treatment, (b) parenthood, (c) health outcomes, (d) communication, (e) coping mechanisms, (f) detrimental impacts on the field, and (g) hope for the future. There were three major conclusions from this study. First, gender inequity in the public health workforce is experienced by women in myriad ways beyond what has been previously captured in the literature particularly for women with intersectional identities. Second, participants' experiences support gender structure theory and contribute a personal lens through which impacts can be examined in terms of sources of inequity and impacts on individuals. Third, gender inequity within the public health workforce may impact work done by the field in terms of which public health issues are prioritized, which in turn can impact the health of entire populations.
