This dissertation provides an examination of the effectiveness of an online training program to educate pre-service teachers the key components to the Response to Intervention Model. The Response to Intervention Model is employed by most school districts across the United States; however, pre-service and in-service training on the RTI Model is lacking, resulting in poor implementation and levels of effectiveness. Participants (N = 93) were enrolled in a Midwestern University and were rewarded with indirect experience hours for an education course. This study employed an experimental design, and participants were randomly assigned to each group (experimental n = 50, control n = 43). Results indicate those in the experimental group significantly improved their knowledge on the RTI model (t(52) = 10.66, p <.001), whereas the control group did not. Participants demonstrated most growth in the areas of identification and explanation of tiered service delivery and special education legislation, and least amount of growth in regard to data-based decision making. Results are consistent with previous similar studies, and support the need for explicit training in each key component of the RTI Model.
