For decades mental health professionals have been exploring the use of alternative treatment delivery methods which may supplement or even replace traditional in-person psychotherapy. While there has been a great deal of research examining the effectiveness of these treatment modalities, and which backs up their continued use, there is little investigation into the attrition (or dropout) rates for non-traditional treatment modalities compared to in-person treatment. This paper takes a small step towards addressing this lack of information by examining the attrition rates of a university counseling center during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing implementation of fully-online treatment rather than traditional in-person counseling. Using the data archives kept at the site being examined, the author found no significant difference in attendance rates for the treatment modalities analyzed. However, due to the unique global circumstances at the time and the specificity of the sample groups, the generalizability of these findings is limited.
