The objective of this research was to collect data about various perspectives on the feasibility and potential benefits or challenges of establishing a repatriation process between private individuals and Native American descendant communities for Native ancestors and cultural objects. American repatriation law currently only applies to federally funded institutions, which does not include private individuals. As a result, private citizens may be unaware of what repatriation is or why it is important. Even for those individuals who know and value the idea of repatriation, a lack of established guidance and oversight for this process can make doing so difficult for all parties involved. However, a provision named "voluntary return" in the Safeguard Tribal Objects of Patrimony (STOP) Act would establish a formal process for the repatriation of privately owned collections to occur. Through confidential surveys and interviews, this study investigated the thoughts and perspectives about establishing a voluntary repatriation process from tribal officials, museum professionals, and private individuals. As the STOP Act has recently passed the United States Senate in December 2020, this research can contribute to broader discussions on the subject as a voluntary repatriation process is potentially enacted into federal law.
