In this dissertation, I investigate the production, circulation, and consumption of home dance videos on new media from 2010 to 2020, specifically focusing on the platform of Instagram. I uncover how performers engage in choreographies of body, space, and media to aestheticize intimacy-or, to cultivate what I call intimaethetics. Intimacy, in this case, refers to the cultivation of a closeness through a multifaceted sense of interiority. The dancing body, the space of the home, and the frame of the camera enable new media denizens to engage in this cultivation so that their images provide a picture of intimacy. Then, once on a platform like Instagram, those images become enveloped into a system of covert, distributed, and commercialized surveillance under the command of neoliberalism capitalism. Through this process, the performer's homespace becomes a stage, their personhood becomes a brand, and their image becomes a vessel from the commodification of social engagement.Drawing from discourses on cinema and media studies, internet studies, and dance and performance studies, The Domestic Stage is the result of collecting and analyzing thousands of publicly-available, self-produced home dance videos on Instagram. This study prompted me to develop a typology of intimaesthetics that is ordered around the performer's relationship to the camera. The four types I discerned became the subjects of the four chapters in this dissertation, each of which hones-in on the mechanisms through which dancers construct a sense of closeness with the viewer and the resulting social, cultural, political, and economic intricacies on the media's circulation online. The arc of this typology demonstrates how intimacy is not only aestheticized in new media, but also commodified, archived, and marketed.
