Grit, an affective trait characterized by consistency of interest and effort over time, has typically been treated as a domain-general construct. But the grit responses of individuals may vary across domains. Accordingly, research was conducted to explore the domain-specificity of grit. The study involved the development and psychometric evaluation of the Reading Grit Scale (RGS), which measures grit as a domain-specific construct in reading while retaining the two-factor structure of the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S), a widely-used domain-general instrument. The results provide evidence for the internal consistency, convergent/divergent validity, and predictive validity of the RGS. Among middle schoolers (n = 234), the RGS was a better predictor of standardized test performance and GPA in English Language Arts, relative to the Grit-S. These findings indicated that grit merits treatment, at least in part, as a domain-specific construct.
