The purpose of this study is to develop performance recommendations to selected early violin compositions by Darius Milhaud: Violin Sonata No. 1, Op. 3 (1911); Violin Sonata No. 2, Op. 40 (1917); and Le Boeuf sur le Toit, Op. 58b (1919).This document will discuss aspects of violin performance practice developed since the nineteenth century to illuminate various technically and musically challenging passages in these selected works, focusing on musical expression, left-hand technique, and right-hand technique.My research will apply this performance practice to an analysis of Milhaud's compositions. I will survey the musical expression that these works demand, as well as technical issues present in each work. I will provide performance recommendations and suggest pedagogical exercises to achieve the required technique. This will include surveying each work's musical expression based on a comparison of various recordings. This study will provide a performer's perspective on the interpretation of Milhaud's early violin works that require a high level of musical expression and advanced violin technique.This document will provide a practical guide to performing these pieces, drawing on a variety of technical approaches, including techniques developed since the nineteenth century. This study will also include an exploration of musical expression based on a comparison of various recordings. The goal of this document is to provide a detailed reference for violin performers interested in adding Milhaud's early violin works to their repertoire and to establish a detailed performance guide for these pieces. All of this information will also serve as a reference for violinists who study early-twentieth century music that requires advanced technique.
