The purpose of this research is to explore the stylistic characteristics of Rachmaninoff's musical language through the lens of the original and revised versions of his Second Piano Sonata, Op. 36 in B♭ minor. Written in 1913, "at the height of his powers", and revised in 1931 during a different period of his life, this work offers insight into various compositional tendencies of his early, middle and late career. His compositional development will be observed not only through the genesis of the Sonata's first and revised versions, but also through consideration of Rachmaninoff's position within music history and his other works. A subchapter will be dedicated to the Sonata's revisions done by Vladimir Horowitz.To fully understand Rachmaninoff's unique style, the reader will learn about traditional and modernist tendencies in his music including: use of altered scales, unique treatment of harmony, cyclic use of thematic material, influences of symbolism, religious and folk music. The focus of the last chapter will be on the comparison of the general compositional traits including form, texture and climax points, between the original and revised edition. In this chapter, I will inspect the relationship with the theory of the "golden mean", as a proportional theory Rachmaninoff experimented with around 1910.
