Home schools are situations in which parents educate their school-aged children at home in lieu of enrolling them in a public or independent school. The number of American home schools in existence has grown from an estimated 15,000 in the early 1970's to well over 120,000 today. The purpose of conducting this study was to determine the child's perception of attending a home school. This purpose guided the researcher in the development of specific questions which were asked in the initial interviews. The research was conducted in a large metropolitan area of Florida where the operation of a home school is legal as an educational alternative. The sample consisted of 20 home school children, who ranged in age from 6 through 13. The sample included both males and females who had different levels of experience as home schoolers, varying from 2 months through 4 years. Data were collected through in-depth interviewing of home school children. Following data collection, the data were analyzed by an ethnographic method. Home school children described reasons that their parents had decided to establish a home school. Factors which influenced the decision included dissonance with traditional education as well as parental aspiration for a more desirable academic environment. Descriptions of both advantages and disadvantages emerged as the children discussed their feelings toward the home school process. The following conclusions were drawn from the findings of the study. (1) The decision to establish a home school is based upon themes of either parental or child dissonance or parental aspiration. (2) The children in this study are aware that home schools have both advantages and disadvantages. (3) The young home school children in this study are content to attend home schools, but this satisfaction dwindles in older children (11 years and older). (4) The home school students in this study feel they have few friends and are socially isolated. (5) Most of the home school students in this study eventually enroll or reenroll in traditional schools.
