Throughout United States' history, Black political organization has been demonized, seen as threatening and met with extreme repressive tactics. Oftentimes, the leaders of these social movements have been the focus of covert operations meant to lessen the viability of their campaigns. Edgar J. Hoover, who led the Federal Bureau of Investigation for half a century, notoriously referred to the leaders capable of stirring radical political sentiments amongst the Black masses as potential "Black Messiahs." In his pursuit to delegitimize these figures, Hoover weaponized the security apparatus of the United States to make sure their impact would be held to a minimum. Due to the impact of Hoover's disposition, discourse surrounding the legacy of the Black messiah is often reduced to describing the historical antagonism enacted by the United States government onto Black political organizations. It can be seen that the Black Messiah's efforts at both, organizing Blacks for political ends and invigorating consciousness raising efforts amongst Black people, is an attempt to end the history of subjugation and colonization of Black Americans in the context of the United States. The Black Messiah is a figure capable of ending the current history of Black Americans and beginning a new one.
