This research assessed the relationship between social-behavioral skills, gross communication skills, social interaction, and social interaction differences, with five domains of aberrant behaviors. The study explored the relationship between social-behavioral and communication skills, including social motivation and aberrant behaviors (i.e., hyperactivity, inappropriate language, lethargy, irritability, and stereotypical behaviors). The effects of applied behavior analysis services were also assessed. A quantitative methodology was used, and three surveys, a background questionnaire, and informed consent were distributed to participants (i.e., parents of children with autism) via Qualtrics. The target population is 135 parents of children diagnosed with autism between the ages of 6 and 17 years and 11 months across the United States. Five research questions aimed to identify if a statistical relationship existed between social responsiveness, communication proficiencies, social-communication motivation, aberrant behaviors, and if applied behavior analysis services improved proficiencies. Results indicated: a strong negative relationship between socio-behavioral skills and aberrant behaviors (p < .001 across all behavior domains; a significant positive association between social-behavioral proficiencies and gross communication skills (p < .001) and an increased desire to interact socially (p < .001); demonstrated that with increased gross communication skills, there was a decrease in hyperactivity (p < .001), inappropriate language (p < .001), lethargy (p < .001), irritability severities (p < .001), and stereotypical behaviors (p < .001); and that no significant relationship was found between the desire to communicate and interact socially and the decrease or increase of aberrant behavior severities. Additional findings indicated that gross communication skills affect the reduction of aberrant behaviors more significantly than social-behavioral skills and the desire to interact socially and that while the duration of applied behavior analysis services received had no significant effect on gross communication abilities or aberrant behavior reduction, receipt of applied behavior analysis did influence the desire to interact socially (p < .001).
