This thesis critically examines the ways in which museums can utilize their web-based resources for increased accessibility and positive experiences for youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as including the involvement of their respective families. ASD is a developmental group of disorders that can disrupt social interactions and relationships, education, and communication with others. Although most museums make their web-based resources accessible to the general public, there is a need for increased accessibility using such resources in order to create meaningful experiences for youth with ASD. As a family member or assisting individual usually accompanies youth, these experiences would also increase the interactions between all present. The implementation of online resources allows youth with ASD to experience the museum more specifically with the aid of virtual or online programs, in order to have a meaningful and sensory-friendly museum experience. There are few community-centered places that engage in consistent accessible activities for youth with ASD. Therefore, there is a growing need for such programs. The study will critically address how the increased use of online resources and technology by museums allows for an increase of accessible resources for children with ASD. These online resources include access to information about programs, web-based programming, and technological accessibility. To determine the extent to which web-based resources and experiences increase accessibility, the study will consider the challenges of technology-based initiatives, specific programs that use digital technology, and the overall influence on ASD youth engagement. The information found hopes to potentially aid in ASD programming and development for museums on a wide-scale basis.
