The purpose of this heuristic arts-based study was to explore the use of virtual reality in art therapy assessments. Art therapy assessments may benefit from incorporating three-dimensional painting as a potential medium. The virtual reality application studied was Google Tilt Brush and the Oculus Quest Virtual Reality platform. I integrated virtual reality into three art therapy assessments comparing Bird's Nest Drawing, Bridge Drawing, and House-Tree-Person in traditional media and virtual reality. Positive outcomes for this media included a sense of privacy and the unique control the user has over the environment which may feel more comfortable during assessment, the cost-effectiveness of the media and ease of image storage. The impact on the assessment itself included the ability to see inside of forms normally subject to interpretation and the ability of the brushes to move. Drawbacks included the time required to learn this system and difficulty erasing.
