Participating in artistic activities can result in feelings of emotional well-being, and community self-efficacy. Over half of our population engages in artistic activities each year. Although these activities differ in form and genre, it illustrates that the arts are valued and sought after on a personal and community level. Offering opportunities to participate in public arts programs can benefit not only the individual but our community well-being and pride in our urban environment. For this study, we follow the creation of The Hope Mural: a pilot community art endeavor organized by the Anchorage Downtown Partnership with the artist Steve Gordon in Anchorage Alaska. Over 500 people participated in this event. A sampling of the participants was surveyed and prompted to give their opinion on community mural making. The findings showed that well over half of the respondents never participated in a mural making activity prior, and almost all surveyed believed that murals can make a positive impact in our city/town with the added benefit of enhancing the tourist and economic potential of Anchorage. Together with research done by the National Endowment of the Arts and decades of mural implementation from organizations such as Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Water Is Life program, we were able to gather a preliminary document that justifies and guides the making of community murals in Anchorage Alaska.
