The following text contextualizes the cultural imagery used in my artwork. As a Puyallup tribal member and a mixed race individual, my art practice employs traditions of drag, Coast Salish design, and satire to explore the complexities of my identities via printmaking, performance, and sculpture. In my thesis I account the history of Coast Salish design from pre-contact with Europeans to the current era. By untangling the history of Coast Salish design, it's function in Coast Salish society, and the effects colonialism has had on Coast Salish design, I reveal the rich culture my work is embedded in. Next I give examples of how my work uses Coast Salish design. Lastly my work discusses the connection between gender and race in the 19th century in America, and how I use these ideologies to critique American colonialism.
